Why 2013 is Going to Be the Best Year Ever

In some ways, of course, 2013 will be a lot like every other year.  Some people will die, so for them it will be a pretty bad year, but others will be born and new joy will come into the world.  There will be some cold and gloomy days, some bright spring  mornings, some long, hot summer afternoons, and a few storms.  Some people will lose  their  jobs and  some people will discover their career of a lifetime.

Their time has come

Their time has come

It’s not likely to be an exceptional year politically.  I doubt very much that the problems in the Middle East will be satisfactorily resolved in 2013 and the powers that be are not likely to repair the economy, since the powers that be are very wealthy people (and their political hirelings) and, for them, the economy is chugging along just fine.

No, 2013 is going to be the best year ever because of advances in science and technology.  Robots are going to keep getting better and better.  The Internet is going to keep growing and, even though the content placed on it is not likely to improve (that would  require an elevation of human intelligence, and I’m not  expecting that), everybody gets to customize their own pages so it’s all cool.  3D printers are going to become more and more common, popping out human organs on demand, and other cool stuff.  Driverless cars will become available.  I don’t know if people will buy them right away, but those who do will be very happy with them and, eventually, the idea will catch on.

Scientists will look deeper and deeper into sub-atomic structure and further and further into outer space.  They will find out more and more about how the mind works, and how computers can mimic that.  The amazing thing is that all of this discovery is happening at the same time and every step forward in one field automatically boosts progress in every other field.  2013 is going to be a totally awesome year.
