Harry Reid said “It’s nobody’s fault” that Guantanamo is still open. This is about as diametrically opposed to Harry S. Truman’s “the buck stops here,” as it is possible to be. It’s the kind of thing you say to a crying 3 year old after he’s done something that was clearly his fault, but you don’t want him to feel too bad about it. To apply the phrase to a situation where people who may be entirely innocent have been incarcerated and tortured for 11 years is unconscionable. It is monstrous.

Of course it’s somebody’s fault, Harry. It’s partly yours, for allowing Republicans to roll all over you in the Senate despite the fact that you are in the majority. It’s yours, for not acting on the mandate you had in 2008. It’s yours, for not standing up to George W. Bush and his war crimes when he was president.
Of course, plenty of blame lies with the Republicans in congress, too. There’s lots of blame to spread around. George W. Bush and every war-mongering cretin who voted for him deserve blame. But I criticize Republicans every night. Just because your opponents are criminals doesn’t let you off the hook for making a lame-ass statement like “It’s nobody’s fault.”
Of course, the ultimate responsibility lies with the quarterback of the team, the captain of the ship. W may have set up the system, but Barack Obama has done nothing to shut it down. Oh, he made some noises, early in his 1st administration, but at the 1st little objection from the Republicans, he collapsed like a wet rag.
I wish it was just that he was weak, but I don’t think that’s it. He’s just as much of a war criminal as the rest. We are doomed.

Obama does not need the permission of Congress, or anyone, to close Guantánamo. The buck does and always did indeed stop with ‘Truman’, not Reid.
