Yeeeehaw! The Senate race in Kentucky is still a year and a half away and Ashley Judd hasn’t even said she’s running yet, but things are getting down and dirty.
On McConnell’s side you’ve got serial slanderer Karl Rove, who has vowed to say infinite stupid things about Ashley Judd until infinity or until he makes her cry, because he’s basically a 13 year old pig who got a lot of power, but never stopped being a 13 year old pig.
On Judd’s side you’ve apparently got some people, as well, who are more concerned with winning than in getting cocktail party credit for not being corrupt, racist hypocrites.
Progress Kentucky, I should emphasize at this point, is not directly affiliated with Judd or any other candidate. They sure don’t like Mitch McConnell very much, though. They’ve been sending out a series of seriously nasty tweets implying that Mitch McConnell is busily sending American jobs to China because his wife is Chinese (her family emigrated from Taiwan when she was 8 years old.)
They sort of apologized for the tweets, saying “Hey, it was just a tweet,” which is a superlame defense, and saying “we’re sorry if we implied that Elaine Chao is not an American citizen,” which nobody’s even accusing them of implying (she was Secretary of Labor in the W administration, which is not exactly a great personal recommendation, but unless we’re going down the reverse birther route, it will serve as proof of citizenship) and that’s not the point, this was clearly more about ethnicity than nationality. They also said “but, hey, he is outsourcing a lot of jobs to China, and he gets big bucks for his campaigns from his father in law,” but still…
It was a dirty trick and if Republicans had pulled it, all good liberals would be crying foul. It was John McCain’s black baby redux.
It was also, perhaps, a stroke of political genius. Since the election hasn’t even begun yet, no specific Democratic candidate can be tarred with this.
And every voter in the great racist state of Kentucky now knows that Mitch McConnell is married to a Chinese woman. The liberals wouldn’t object a bit, but no liberals were going to vote for Mitch McConnell anyway. Boyd Crowder and all his kin are going to be facing a choice between a Hollywood liberal, environmentalist, feminist and probably every other damned thing, and the guy married to a Chinese woman.
Plenty of them will just stay home.
(Still, it was racist and very uncool. They apologized, but they knew exactly what they were doing.)

Ashley Judd has already condemned the attacks.
