Slow news day today, I really don’t have anything to say about the new pope, the Catholic church and pedophilia that I didn’t say yesterday. I might point out that Paul Ryan’s budget is about what you’d expect from a guy that lied about his marathon time (basically, the dude just makes up numbers and then starts to think they are real), but all I have to say about that was right there at the start of this sentence.
So, I’ll just write about my day. Thursday is my crazy day. I leave the house at 6:15 and don’t get home till almost 12 hours later, and there’s a hell of a lot of variety in the teaching I do along the way. The first two classes are at a business and usually I hate business classes but both of the students are easy to converse with so it’s not much effort.
The worst part is the trip there. Wrote a poem about that:
I see you on the Metro and I know that you’re not rich
You’re probably on your way to work and your job is a son of a bitch
Some kind of routine drudgery in an office or a shop
Where you will spend 5 days each week till you’re old enough to drop
It’s 8 o’clock in the morning and the day has just begun
You’ve nothing to look forward to, you’re life is not much fun
That’s the fate of the common man, the downtrodden working classes
The lumpen proletariat, the mob, the horde, the masses
How you deal with this depression, of course, is a matter of personal style
But Jesus Christ Almighty, WOULD IT KILL YOU TO FUCKING SMILE?!
It’s not just Prague, you see that grim early morning off to the salt mines look all around the world, but I think Prague is the worst.
Anyway, after that class, I take the bus and the metro back over to the school, and my 1st class was 6th graders, who are a good group, and then my 9th graders, who are a horrible, sullen group but today they co-operated for the most part. I think I need to spend a little more time getting them to write stuff down, because they’re just not a real conversational bunch. It seemed to work today at any rate. Then, I had my 1st graders, who just went nuts and wore me into the ground.
I stopped by one of my employers, where it is usually an interminable hassle to get paid but they paid me in full in two minutes, so that was a lovely surprise.
Then, my class of 3 seven year old girls, who start each lesson by hiding from me. Today, the rest of the lesson didn’t go much better. So, some ups and some downs. One day to go before the weekend and I am really, really looking forward to it.

I know what you mean about people not smiling, nor talking, in public. If one does smile at a stranger now days people accuse you of flirting or wanting something, rather than just accepting that you just being cordial. So much for the good ole days when people talked to each other.
