This article was sort of creepy, in an Island of Dr. Moreau sort of way. Basically, they hooked up a human and a rat via machine and the human could make the rat wag his tail just by concentrating. So, the mind is flooded with images of body snatchers, and human animal hybrids, and zombies. I’m not sure what this actually has to do with zombies, but it seems to go with body snatchers and human animal hybrids.
I am pretty impressed with the technology, though, and there are lots of good uses for it. For starters, if they can control a rat brain, they can probably control a robotic brain and that means remote controlled robots roaming all over the city, ….oh, wait, that’s still a pretty negative vision.
But it will allow amputees to move artificial limbs easier, which is no small thing. And the remote controlled robots would actually be a good thing. Whatever the dirty, unpleasant or painful job, the human employees of the future will just sit in front of a screen and think the command – pick up this and move it over there, paint that wall, blow up that building. I’m sure it will work out real well.
Basically, I just think it’s cool because the more we understand about the mind, the more we can integrate every other thing we are learning about the mind and there and many different aspects of the mind to be studied but they all link together in the end because the mind, actually, is not a large place.
I predict that within the next couple of years we are going to have a major breakthrough in human intelligence, possibly through some kind of mind control technology like this, or some kind of human-computer link, or some kind of chemical or surgical enhancement to the brain, or even actual artificial intelligence.
Whatever it is, it will appear monstrous. But it will also appear amazing, and we won’t be able to turn away. Because we are human.
This makes me think of the scene in Mars Attacks! where they put the girls head on the chihuahua.
