Chelsea Manning

Oh, my.  I just don’t know what to make of Bradley, from this point forward to be known as Chelsea, Manning.

On the  one hand, I fully support the right of anybody to be referred to in any way they want to, so if he wants to change his name and be referred to as she, I can live with that.  As a blogger,  it’s a piece of cake to shift the pronouns.

Even the bit about wanting to actually become a woman, well, he’s she’s an adult so who’s going to stop her.  Well, probably the U.S. government for the  next 10 years or so.  That’s a shame, but there it is.

The thing that bothers me about it all is that it’s a merging of plot lines.  He can be either a whistleblowing hero, a 21st century Benedict Arnold, or a guy who wants to get a sex change operation.  Those are three very different stories, and they don’t really mix.  If I saw this in a TV serial, I would be shrieking “Sensationalism!  Bad writing!”

But, there it is.  All my protestations amount to is “This seems strange to me,” and so be it, this is not about me.  Truth is stranger than fiction and this is the Chelsea Manning story now.

One little point I’d like to add is I don’t  think it will affect her levels of support at all.  Those of us who support her are probably mostly cool with the gender-choice issue as well, because we’re liberal; and those who didn’t couldn’t possibly hate  her any more than they already do.

  1. I have to Say many MtoF Transsexuals join the Forces to try and ‘Man up’ but the Processes usually fails because it was Motivated by peer pressure not personnel choice…..
Also your continued use of the Male pronoun after stating it was easy to change the pronoun is Bordering on Trans-phobia and also Offensive…
