The world of information
is an ocean deep, an ocean wide
swim for all you’re worth,
but you will never reach the other side

This was my response to a Facebook friend who said “I can never read through all the posts on here,” which is also my case, but the way I see it is that that is a result of having too many Facebook friends, and also preferable to the opposite. As it is, I have approximately 1,500 Facebook friends, approximately 1,300 of whom I don’t know at all in real life, and maybe another 100 or so who I’ve only met briefly. If I were to trim my friends list down to that 200 who I actually know who they are, I probably would be able to read through everything and then what would I do with the rest of the day?
It’s not just true of Facebook, though. I’ll never be able to see all the movies that have ever been made, and they keep making new ones. I doubt if I’ll ever even see all the GOOD movies that have been made. I doubt that anybody can. They’ve been making full length, feature films since the 1920s, and I’m sure that if you watched them all back to back, it would take longer than a human being’s life span.
I’ll never be able to read all the great books that have been written. Not even close.
I’ll never hear every song, not even every song that’s ever made the top 40, which is a list that varies from country to country, and a lot of fantastic music isn’t on it.
There are about 200 countries on the face of the Earth and there may be some obsessed adventurer types who’ve been to all of them, although North Korea and some others might pose a severe challenge. I haven’t been to a quarter of them, though, and some people would consider me well traveled.
Each of those countries has their local cuisine, and special dishes. On this most recent vacation I tried a couple of things I’d never had before. A fig cake (which tasted a bit like a harder, thicker Fig Newton, without the Newton), and a tomato and onion pie, which was delicious. Still, you can only eat 5 or 6 times a day, and less than that if you’re not a pig, so I will never try all the foods in the world.
There’s a lot of variety in this life, and that’s just the way I like it. It means things will always be interesting.
