Modern Art is Crap

O.K., it’s a slow news day because, after all, it’s kind of hard to top the death of Bin Laden, and certainly the first Republican presidential candidate’s debate is not going to do it.

Well, actually, I may blog about that tomorrow night, after it happens, particularly if there is great hilarity, but I don’t believe anybody present is going to be a serious contender for Barry’s title.

So, tonight you get random thoughts.

Red Poppies at Argenteuil - Claude Monet

I’m watching a program on the History Channel about the history of art.  I really enjoyed the part about the impressionists, never realized Degas was such an asshole, but there’s two sides to every story and I wasn’t there.  Now they are talking about modern art and, it strikes me again, it’s a lot of hooey.  They can talk about how it represents uncertainty, and the modern spirit of questioning everything, but to me it’s a copout.  If you have to interpret a painting to that extent, then the interpretation is more important than the work itself.  Since the interpretation is the important thing, why do we not gather to stare at blank walls and converse with each other about what’s in our own minds and dispense with the artist altogether.

One thing in art museums that really bothers me.  On the plaque on nearly every piece, the title is listed as “Untitled.” This is bullshit.  If the artist doesn’t know what it’s about, how can he expect the viewing public to know?

Well, that’s it for tonight’s blog.  Thanks for reading.
