To Gloat or Not to Gloat

Somebody yesterday made the comment on my facebook page that we (meaning we liberals) should not be gloating about Tuesday night’s win, the epic collapse of the right, the monumental ass whooping of the teabaggers, the political extinction of the knuckle-dragging, Neanderthal neo-confederates.  I respectfully disagree.

There are two ways you could interpret his statement.  We should not gloat because it’s not nice to gloat, it is poor sportsmanship and bad manners; Or, we should not gloat because it is bad political strategy, it galvanizes the enemy and hardens their positions.

On the first point: that is very true, but I’m willing to make an exception in this case.  These are people who pounce like crackhead cats on every misstep, every innocently misspoken word by any Democrat anywhere, and hold it up as proof positive that we are all parasites and moral degenerates.  You can be absolutely sure that if they had won, they would be gloating insufferably.

There are even a couple of them (Grover Norquist, for instance) who are trying to spin their loss as a win, because the Democrats failed to take back the House of Representatives, only picking up a few seats.

Politically, I don’t think it matters at all.  Our opponents on the right are so blockheadedly ignorant they are pretty much oblivious to the fact that we’re gloating.  Also, the next election isn’t for a whole two years and people’s memories are much shorter than that.  The Republican primaries of last spring were pretty much entirely forgotten by the time the parties had had their conventions.

We can go ahead and gloat.  For a couple of weeks.  Then, it’s time to refocus on the issues.
