A Humble Hero

A couple of things tonight.  First, shame on South Carolina.  When a governor goes missing from his job and is totally incommunicado for several days, and then it turns out he flew off to Argentina, using taxpayer money, to see his mistress, that person should be out of public life permanently.  That person should probably be in jail, but we don’t need to be vindictive.  But, the voters of South Carolina decided that “Well, he might be a total scumbag and his ex-wife has a restraining order against him, but he’s a Republican and the lady running against him is a Democrat, so there.”  This is really, incredibly stupid voting.  Shame on South Carolina.  You get the congressional representation, and the beauty queens, that you deserve.

On to the Cleveland kidnapping case.  This is something out of “Criminal Minds.”  This is not something you expect to hear about in real life.  Three women had been kidnapped and kept as sex slaves by 3 men, tied up and raped repeatedly, for years.  When they got pregnant, they were beaten until they had miscarriages.  Nonetheless, one of them had a child.

I’m not the first person to say this, but shame on the Cleveland police that these girls weren’t found earlier, although some neighbors say they had called the police.  I guess they must have been too busy looking for pot smokers – for 10 years.

Rush Limbaugh outdid himself, managing to turn the case into a rant about Obama, and a complaint about welfare mothers.  You would hope that after all they have been through, these women would be met with nothing but overwhelming human  kindness and sympathy, for the rest of their lives, but no…

Rush Limbaugh and the voters of South Carolina make me wonder…is their no bottom to this pit, is there no low so low that conservatives won’t go?

A word about Charles Ramsey.  Yeah, he did a great thing, but I think it was more a question of just being in the right place at the right time than really being heroic.  He heard screams and he went and helped the girl force the door open, then he called 911.  I get the feeling that Ramsey himself is a little bit embarrassed by the hero talk, saying that any reward money should be given to the girls and not to him – he’s got a job.  A great guy, to be sure.  Definitely somebody you’d  want as a neighbor or a friend.  But, really, he just did what anybody else would have done in the same situation – at least I would hope so.
