$100 Billion is a Lot of Money

Charles and David Koch stand to make approximately $100 billion if the Keystone XL pipeline is approved.  So, it’s no surprise that they’ve spent a lot of money and effort lobbying for it.

That’s a whole lot of money.  Of course, they don’t really need it.  They’ve both got nice homes.  They’ve both got nice cars.  They’ve both got all the clothes they’ll need to wear for the rest of their lives.

Still, if you’ve spent your whole life in the accumulation of wealth, it sort of becomes a habit.  An author always wants to write another book, an actor always wants to make another movie, some rock stars always want to make another tour.  Some people just don’t want to retire.

I wouldn’t really object to them making another $100 billion, to add to the billions and billions they already have, if there was some need for the pipeline, some way in which the general public was going to benefit from it – but there is none.

Oil is not the only fuel source out there any more.  We could switch to solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, tidal, or some combination of all of the above.  If we were willing to spend 10 or 20 billion on the research, we could probably even turn the corner on nuclear fusion.  The only reason we’re sticking with oil at all is so arrogant sons of bitches like Charles and David Koch can continue to make obscene profits.

Which they could still do, without laying waste to the environment, if they were to invest a bit more creatively in alternative energy sources, and other endeavors which would benefit mankind.  But nooooo.  Much easier just to start an obstructionist political party, bribe politicians all over the place, and lay their nasty old pipeline right across the United States, north to south.

For all their tremendous wealth, their value to the human race is less than 0.
