Nuclear Cleanup

I am not using this as an argument in favor of nuclear energy.  I’m actually kind of on the fence on that subject.  If we could be certain it was safe, it could solve all our energy needs, and I believe that science eventually can make it safe, but Chernobyl and Fukushima have made it clear that it’s not safe yet.  mushrooms

Even with Chernobyl and Fukushima, nuclear energy has caused fewer deaths and less environmental damage than coal and oil.  So, I’d like to see it work.  But, I’d also like to see wind energy, tidal energy, solar energy and geothermal energy gain wider acceptance.

Also, while I put a lot of faith in science, I don’t have as much faith in politicians or corporate interests.  And, like most people, I don’t understand the science.

So, there’s no way to ever be certain that it’s safe and we need to remain a bit skeptical about it.  Nonetheless, this article provides hope that, despite human stupidity, despite our fooling around with technologies we don’t completely understand, we might be saved from ourselves by the amazing life force of nature, the spark, which seems to be inherent in the universe, for life to develop.

These radiation eating fungi are the most extreme of any extremophiles we’ve discovered yet.  What this article means to me is that life will evolve in almost any environment, no matter how forbidding.   Therefore, it is undoubtedly as common as Starbucks, throughout the universe.
