Better Than a Movie

tahitian women, na Prstkovo Museum

We did something today that we haven’t done for a while.  Went to a museum.  The funny thing was, it was a last minute plan and not our first choice.

The original plan was for Helena to take Isabel to a marionette show, Spiebel and Hurvinek, while I would take Sam to see The Deathly Hallows, which I think is a bit too adult for him but my offered choices were Jack Black in Gulliver’s Travels and Yogi Bear.  He’s 8, he probably sees this level of violence on TV, I thought.  Anyway, when Helena phoned to check on the start time, they said “No reservation, ha, ha, ha.”  So, we have to find something for the whole family and my film options are now a cartoon that I thought was funny as a kid, but I’m pretty sure I’m not going to get all the jokes in Czech and the voice will be strange, and Jack Black being comically tied up by tiny little people.  I suggested we go to the zoo.  Helena thought it would be too cold but actually the day turned out fairly nice, not freezing and dry, I really hate going to the zoo on a hot day in summer mostly because that’s when everybody goes and my sense of communion with wild nature and the animal kingdom is really inhibited by the horde of human beings.  The kids didn’t much take to the idea, either.

So, I suggested a museum, fully expecting to receive the same response and being ultimately forced to choose between two bad cinematic options, I was quite pleased when my lovely wife backed up the suggestion, and the kids didn’t mind.

It’s a strange, little museum with some Japanese stuff, some American Indian stuff and some South Sea island stuff, like some rich traveler’s private collection fleshed out with some dioramas and, in one room, a slide show.  Souvenirs of the great, wide world.  The price for the family was the same as one ticket at the movies, nobody was screaming for popcorn.  It was a lovely afternoon.
