Man’s Position in the Universe

So, Sam had a football tournament, we had to get there at 7:30 which meant we were out the door well before dawn, and it lasted till damned near 3 in the afternoon.  Despite periodic exciting sports moments, I get pretty bored by the end  (they did fine, 3rd out of 7 teams).  So, I usually bring a book to read.  Today, though, i just took a notebook, (in the literal old fashioned sense of a notebook, with paper) because tonight was my once a month poetry reading (Alchemy, if you’re in Prague check it out) and I had nothing.

Indoor football is not a conducive environment for writing poetry.  Constant noise, balls whizzing past your head, that sort of thing.  So, I didn’t write the one I wanted to, but I did squeeze this out, and kind of like it:

The tea does not contain the cup

The bird does not contain the sky

The fish does not contain the sea

and so I sometimes wonder why

we think that we can comprehend

a universe of never ending

space and never ending time

it’s not contained within our minds

Actually, that’s kind of depressing.  But in a sense I find it liberating, too.  The universe is vast beyond our powers to even take in the size of it, much less the variety.  That doesn’t mean we should stop trying.

It just means that we are only responsible for that small portion of it we happen to be standing on.

Very good. If everyone believed this they would be more humble and tolerant of others = better world.
