Now, I must say, I hate to indulge in conspiracy theories where a Democrat is involved. On the other hand, Jane Harman isn’t really much of a Democrat. Plus, it’s a solid progressive district and pretty much anybody who takes her place will be an improvement. She supported the Iraq War. She supported warrantless wiretapping. She once called herself “the best Republican in the Democratic party.” Seriously. Not a hint of irony.
But I’m not buying this nonsense about resigning, now, effective immediately, to be head of something called The Woodrow Wilson Center. The elections were in November. The term is barely begun. She’s been in congress for 16 years, going on 18. This is not somebody who is going to give up a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives lightly. The Woodrow Wilson Center. I’ve never even heard of the Woodrow Wilson Center.
It’s some fancy-shmancy think tank, apparently. Now, really, most think tanks are just diguised PACs, they’re like one step above lobbyists, if that. I’ll reserve judgment, perhaps the WWC is one of the better ones. Doesn’t matter. U.S. congressperson vs. Director of practically unknown Think Tank, without any real power whatsoever. It just doesn’t add up.
It sounds to me like “resigning to be director of the Woodrow Wilson Center” is the new “resigning to spend more time with my family.” In other words, bullshit.
I don’t know what they’ve got on old Jane. Maybe it’s something to do with her lobbying for Israel, that was pretty scummy. Maybe it’s just more routine bribery and corruption charges. I don’t want to talk about any possible sex scandals. The woman is 65. Tax evasion, maybe? She is worth over $150 million, with her husband. Illegal maid? Nah, that wouldn’t be enough.
I don’t know what they’ve got on her, but it must be something big. And we will probably never know.

Well, maybe, but the guy she’s replacing was also a former congressman, and if it is the place where they’re planning domestic and foreign policy (hey, isn’t that what congress is supposed to do?) then power could be a big motivator. Probably accompanied by a big salary hike too. Not surprising that we’ve never heard of the secret place where they plan government policy. There’s probably an even more secret one than this.
