Civility

A few days back, a 51 year old  Trump supporter named Reginald Lee threw chicken poop at the Red Hen restaurant in Lexington, Virginia.  How do  we know he was a Trump supporter?  Because, as he threw the chicken poop, which he was holding  in his hand, at the side of the restaurant (the one which refused to serve Sarah Huckabee Sanders, on account of her being the lying henchwoman for the evil DJT), he shouted ‘Make America Great Again!’
And they expect us to be civil?  Well, actually, probably we should, but we’re kind of tired of that.  It doesn’t seem to be working very well.

Progressives are all about being civil, as a general  rule.  We’re all  for civil rights,  the more the merrier.  And, being socialists and all, we’re very big on this concept of civilization, which is everybody  working together for the common good, and I  believe  it was invented approximately 65,000 years ago.
But perhaps when loser Trump white supremacists hear the word ‘civil’ they think ‘civil war’ and suddenly that sense of ‘we hate the Yankees worse than anybody, ever’ kicks right  in.
This is a problem.

The Reason Kennedy Resigned

Although we only found out about this  today, the story  begins back  when the president of the United States was just another sleazy real estate developer, having a hard time getting  any banks to loan him money, on  account of all  his bankruptcies and all.
Deutsche Bank, oddly  enough,  was the one that came through with  about a billion dollars in loans.  The head of the department that approved those loans  was Justin Kennedy, who is the son  of Supreme Court justice Anthony Kennedy.
Now, this might not point to any kind of serious corruption at all.  At the time Trump was not president.  It’s not terribly surprising that the son of a Supreme Court  justice is, himself, successful and well connected.  And Kennedy was appointed to the Supreme Court by Ronald Reagan, long before Trump even thought  of  getting into politics.
But it sure seems to be the reason Anthony Kennedy  resigned.  It seems that way to me since the story broke within 24 hours and  no other believable explanation  was given  for his  retirement.

So, I think  that somehow the loans from Deutsche Bank were shady, or at least are going to be part of Mueller’s evidence, and I’d be happy  with  that because if they bring his personal finances into  it, he might  not  only be impeached, but  also  prosecuted and have to do  prison time.  In that case, Kennedy would have to recuse himself because he can’t be judging his own son.
It also might  mean that Mueller is going to lay  out the case  soon.

We will see, but that’s my guess at this  point.

Another Day, Another Mass Shooting

It has  happened again.  This time it was at the office of a newspaper in Maryland.  A man  with  a  gun came in and killed  5 people.  I’m  guessing  it was a white  man, because he’s  in police custody.  We’ll know more by tomorrow,  like his name and whether neighbors say “he was a quiet man,  he seemed so  normal,” or “oh, yeah, we knew he was loopy, we’d reported him to  the  police many times.”  Like whether he  was a disgruntled former employee, (which is the standard in these cases) or maybe had had a bad breakup  with somebody who works for the paper, or maybe it was just kind of random.
I did see one theory  posted on Facebook and I hope it’s wrong, because it bodes  very badly for the future, but I can’t shake the feeling that maybe that’s it.  The post pointed out that Trump has  been  vigorously denouncing the press lately, and referring to  them as the enemy (which certainly seems to be how Sarah Huckabee Sanders  feels).
Maybe the gunman took  Trump’s words to heart?  If this were ‘The Fisher King’ that would  make Trump the Jeff Bridges character.  Will he feel  the  same  guilt?  I  sure doubt it.

Good News, Bad News

I woke up this morning encouraged by the news.  Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez beat the Clintonite machine politician Joe Crowley, which should not have been so amazing – she’s right on the issues and about a thousand times more charismatic – but  he did outspend her 10-1, he’d been in the office 20 years, and he had the full backing of all the usual  DNC hacks.  So, it was a pretty  big deal.
Also, and this garnered a lot less publicity, Ben Jealous won the Democratic nomination for governor of Maryland.  He still has to get through the general election but I  think he can  do it, and a governorship is a pretty big deal.  There are only 50 of them.
So, I was jazzed.  Of course, this was only two victories and there were about 5 states had primaries, so we’re not exactly sweeping  them aside the way I would like.  The corruption is  deeply entrenched, they do  have all the money, all the party backing, most of the media attention and the inside track, but we’re chipping away, we’re making a difference, and the next congress will have more progressives than the current one.
Then, I hear that Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy is resigning.  This is  not good.  This is not good  at all.  This is,  in fact, really fucking bad.  Of course, Kennedy is, kind of, a conservative justice.  He was appointed  by Reagan and sided with Republicans often as not.  But, he was not  like Scalia, or Thomas, or Alito.  He was a judge, not a right wing nut case, and he occasionally sided  with Kagan, Sotomayor, Ginsberg and Breyer, keeping  the country on an even  keel.
That’s going to end with whoever Trump nominates.  Sure, if it’s somebody too extreme or weird, congress  could refuse to confirm.  But, we’re talking about a congress which had no problem confirming Scott Pruitt for head  of  the EPA, Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education, and Jeff Sessions as Attorney General.
This is a congress which isn’t even  talking about impeachment,  despite Trump’s numerous crimes.  So, I’m pretty sure he’ll get his pick and I’m pretty sure  his pick  will  be a Fascist, and that will mean a Fascist majority Supreme Court.
I hope that doesn’t happen, but I don’t see what’s going to  stop it.

Non Me Frega

Melania, Melania, we did not care that you were a ‘model’ who posed naked and in lesbian embraces because we’re liberal that way.  Liberal women excuse you because they feel you were probably forced into it some way, and liberal men, well, just like conservative men, we thought it was  kind of hot, so criticizing you over that would have seemed hypocritical.
Now, I don’t really care.
We were not bothered that you were an immigrant, and that your parents are immigrants.  We’re all for immigrants.
Now, I don’t really care.
We were not bothered  that you used  your good looks to snag a billionaire husband.  Personally, I  see that as a very reasonable move.  You get to live a life of wealth and luxury, and you were probably going to marry somebody, right?
Now, I don’t really care.
We didn’t hold it against you that your husband is  a boorish moron.  That is not your fault.
Now, I  don’t really care.
We didn’t hold it against you that you didn’t want to live in the White House.  Bess Truman didn’t want to live there, either, and she was married to a Democrat.
Now, I don’t really care.

You wore  the jacket and you knew what you were doing.  It was the sartorial equivalent of waving backwards to the crowd, with your middle finger standing out from the others just enough so they’d all notice.  And you were coming from visiting children in prison.  Immigrant children.  Like you.  Except most of them will never wind  up shtooping a billionaire and becoming first  lady.
So, the gloves are off, Melania.  You’re a slut, you’re a whore, you’re an ignorant bimbo.  You’re a rude, inconsiderate, heartless, unfeeling bitch.
You no longer get any consideration from  me.  Because I don’t really care.
