Panther Love

The rumor is that the Carolina Panthers are going to sign Colin Kaepernick. At this point, it’s no more than that, I couldn’t find any official confirmation so it might not happen.
But, if it does, I will instantly become a Carolina Panthers fan. I’m generally not that interested in American football. I live in Europe, so I’ve seen Romelo Lukaku play more than Colin Kaepernick, and that’s a whole different sport. Even back when I still lived in the U.S., I didn’t have a favorite team. People from Iowa go in different directions. Some Vikings fans, some Bears fans, some people root for St. Louis or Kansas City teams. It’s a pro sports wasteland.
I lived in L.A. for a long time, a city where the most important sport is movies, and never developed a love for any of the sports teams there. Oh, I would watch the Super Bowl, or a playoff game, or a college game if friends were watching it. It’s easy, then. You just cheer for whoever everybody else is cheering for, and everybody’s happy. Unfortunately, that’s how many people form their political opinions.
I am sure there are people from the other side, who will be furious, but screw them. They will have a whole league full of teams to root for, who didn’t sign Kaepernick.
I’ll be cheering for them every game and hope they make it all the way to the Super Bowl and win. Yeah, just to watch the right wingers heads explode.
But, it’s still just a rumor.

Why They Fear Bernie

It does seem that Bernie’s on a roll. He’s doing well in polls, especially in early states, he gets standing ovations wherever he goes (his appearance on Jimmy Fallon was epic), he’s picking up endorsements, and he’s looking and sounding great. So, the opposition to him mounts.
Michael Bloomberg is spending 30 million dollars on ad buys, and the race has barely begun. For a bit of context, that’s about 28 million dollars more than 4 years of a president’s salary. To put it into context from another direction, Bloomberg has over 50 billion dollars. He’s the 11th richest person in the world. Just like Trump, this is a business deal to him. Also, there’s the talk of Obama coming out against Bernie, which I’m a bit skeptical of as he hasn’t actually said that himself, but, the signs are there: the Democrats are going to go to extreme lengths to try to stop Bernie Sanders. Why?

I think one of the reasons they are so worried about Bernie becoming president is they think he might get Universal Health Care and it will be a raging success, he’ll get his Green New Deal going and poof! there goes homelessness and unemployment, he’ll erase student debt and nothing bad will happen, lift sanctions on Venezuela and their economy will instantly recover, stop invading foreign countries for no damn reason and peace will bloom all over the world, legalize marijuana and girl scout cookie sales will increase, and a few smart people here and there will look up and say “Hey, we could have done this at any point in the last 40 years.”
And I am glad they are worried.

A New Name for Thanksgiving

Donald Trump lies constantly, several times a day at least, and his lies are so completely stupid and irrelevant that most don’t even get responded to, and this one is no exception. I will mock it in this blog but I’m pretty sure by tomorrow (which is Thanksgiving) most folks will have already forgotten about it.
Taking a page from the Bill O’Reilly playbook, Trump said the other day that Democrats want to rename Thanksgiving. But, since the ancient toddler probably has an even less on the ball listenership than Billo, his attempt to escalate the totally imaginary War on Christmas will probably fail.
Not that I have any real objection to renaming Holidays, we could probably have a lot of fun with that, but what would we change Thanksgiving to? I know some people call it Turkey Day, but I don’t think it’s really a movement. I suppose you could call it Pre-Christmas, or Novemberfest. If you put it up for a public vote, you’d probably wind up with Turkey McTurkeyface. If you wanted more historical accuracy, I suppose you could call it Genocidius, but I’m not sure everybody wants to be reminded of that. Shame about the native Americans, but could you pass the mashed potatoes?
In short, if any Democrat had actually suggested a name change, they haven’t put much thought into it, and clearly Trump has put even less.
So, I guess we’re stuck with Thanksgiving for now. It’s not too late for next year, though.

Which Way, Obama?

There’s an article in the Huffington Post, it’s been up a day or two, about how Obama is thinking about stepping up and leading a stop Bernie drive.
I read the article, a lot of it is “a source familiar with Obama’s thinking said” and stuff like that, but just because people don’t want their names used doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not true. Also, the Huffington Post tends to be of the limousine liberal persuasion. Not exactly progressive.
So, the whole thing should be taken with a grain of salt, but I’m willing to entertain the possibility that it’s true. He did endorse Hillary over Bernie in 2016, although he waited until fairly late in the game to do it, and his policies were never anywhere near as comprehensive as Bernie’s. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he endorsed his former V.P. and good friend, Joe Biden.
But, it doesn’t really matter. If he does support somebody other than Bernie, it will affect his legacy more than it affects Bernie’s chances of winning. He has been silent long enough, and the pace of change has been quick enough, that even though he was President up until 3 years ago, his opinion now would be drowned in the waves, just one among many.
If he doesn’t support somebody else specifically, just comes out and says “I don’t like Bernie and don’t want him to be the nominee” his reputation as a man of the people who wants the best thing for all mankind goes straight into the toilet. I’ve seen enough aerial views of his Martha’s Vineyard mansion. So has everybody else.

Continued from Last Blog

I’ve been thinking about yesterday’s blog today and I’m not sure I expressed myself with all the clarity I could have. This thought has been rattling around in my head for a while. So, I wrote this little poem.

If the only choice we had

was just to vote for ‘good’ or ‘bad’

all spelled out clear as clear

and plain as day

I still don’t know if people would

vote the way I think they should

folks are kind of stubborn

in that way

because to me it seems this election year that it’s precisely that clear. We need to save the planet and nobody has any plan that comes close to Sanders plan for it. His plan will create jobs and build homes for the homeless at the same time. Three birds with one stone. He wants to get money out of politics and the only one with him on that is Tulsi. The others are all crooked as hell. He wants to give everybody health care, give everybody free college and cancel student and medical debt. And, he’s explained how to pay for it all without causing anybody extreme hardship. He is really that good.
If you insist on voting for bad, I guess that’s on you.
