Travelers

…is the show I’m watching on TV at the moment, I’ve seen just 3 episodes so far and I’m kind of on the fence  as to whether I like it or not, but since there’s so much crap  on TV that I  even  watch Reign and appreciate it because it’s not the most mindless thing on, believe it or not, I’m willing  to give this a shot.
It’s about time travel, but it’s a bit confusing, because I’ve never seen them in any time other than the present.  I think the plot is that they’re coming back from a few centuries in the future to prevent us from totally fucking things up, and they have all sorts of cool, high tech devices, but I’m not really sure yet.  It’s very confusing and jumps around a lot, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it isn’t necessarily a good thing, either.

The main character is the guy who starred in Perception, which I got thoroughly sick of very quickly.  For a college professor, he sure seemed to get caught up in murder investigations at the drop of a hat, and the little gimmick of him being a schizophrenic genius who always hallucinated the solution to the crime didn’t help  matters any.  Plus, I am sorry, because he’s a decent actor and seems to be a nice guy, but LaVar Burton is just irretrievably typecast.  I can’t see him without seeing that huge visor covering the top of his  face.
But, that was Perception and this  is a different show.  I’ll give it a few more episodes.

The Horror in Gaza

One of the reasons I started writing a blog in the first place, some 6 or 7 years ago, was a deluded notion that I could always find a 3rd way when everybody was stuck in a dichotomous argument, that I could transcend the issues, take a view from above, and at least bring something original to every conversation.

As to what happened in Gaza today, I doubt that I can.  I hope I find myself on the side of the majority when I say  I am absolutely horrified by the actions of the Israeli army, firing on unarmed civilians and murdering at least 52 of them. (thousands were injured – the death toll could still rise)  This is completely unacceptable.  The Palestinians have no army, no navy, no air force, they live behind barbed wire and are absolutely no threat to Israel.

One thing for sure.  Jews, of whom there are probably less than  a grand total of 20 million world-wide, and of whom there are only 4 or 5 million in Israel, do not deserve the amount of attention the world pays to us (I am half Jewish. My mother was Jewish.)  We are not God’s chosen people, because there is no God.  There will be no battle of the end of the world at Har Megiddo, because prophecies are nonsense.  For many (like me) Jewishness is more a coincidence of genealogy than a religion.  We certainly are not  secretly in charge of the world’s finances.

There are lots of good, and brilliant people who are Jews.  There are, apparently, a lot of shitbags, too.  Today, we saw the shitbags.  Today, Israel is an embarrassment to Jewish people everywhere.

What Sarah Said

I am writing this Monday morning because I didn’t write it last night, lapsing from my eternal vow to write a blog a day forever.  Sometimes it happens, but usually there’s a good excuse, like we are on the road and a long way from  wi-fi, or something like that.

Last night, I was falling asleep and it wasn’t late, and couldn’t think of a good topic.  That’s not a good excuse, because it wasn’t earned fatigue.  Mostly I sat around and did nothing all day.  Did go for a short walk, and it was seriously hot outside, not quite painfully hot, but a sure sign that we will  get there this summer.  No, it was just that, after the third joint, I was whacked into immobility.

Sarah Palin was in my dream last night.  I was back in school, and she was a member of the faculty who stopped me while wandering around in the hallway.  So, I suppose that means I should have written my blog last night about her, which I am writing now.

She is still an idiot, of course, a Trump supporter and raving right wing lunatic, but she did have some good things to say about Julian Assange.  I don’t know if it’s the ‘blind pig finding an acorn sometimes’ thing, or if it’s that strange meeting of left and right that sometimes happens when both of them are sufficiently removed from the center, but they were good things, true things, and I was glad to hear them.

It was all about how he’s trying to get information out and information is good because it helps us make better decisions.  Freedom of information.  It really is the key to a brighter future.  Thank you, Sarah Palin.

Lazy Saturday

Didn’t do much at all today. ‘Nothing to write home about’, I guess is the saying, but today that might be ‘nothing to write a blog about’.  Anyway, didn’t do much, barely got  out  of the house, we did go out for pizza and that was great, first outdoor dining of the season.  Didn’t even shower all  day, that’s how lazy a day it was.

I did get one poem written, part of my ‘steal a line’ book, and I was kind of pleased with it, I used Theodore Roethke’s ‘I  wake to  sleep…’ but, I don’t know.  It’s got three stanzas and doesn’t really  end on a funny line, but hey…I  never promised they  would all be comic.
I’ve notice in my  book that I have a preference for poets who were writing well over a hundred years ago.    I suppose it’s all  about the rhyme and the meter, but also with regard to subject matter and comprehensibility…well, I don’t really get  a lot of  it.  There’s a poetry site I visit where they say ‘don’t post if you’re not commenting on other people’s stuff, and I haven’t posted much there lately, (I’m not quitting the site, I just haven’t posted there much lately) and I’ve been slack on commenting on other’s stuff, because a lot of the time I read it and think ‘Egad, you call  this writing?’ and that is not exactly what anybody wants to hear.  But, I suspect that some of  them think the same about my stuff.

Why Don’t the Aliens

The Fermi Paradox, I think it is, that wonders why, if there is intelligent, extraterrestrial, space faring life in the universe, nobody’s ever visited.  At least, nobody’s ever landed in a highly visible milieu, emerged from their ship, and asked to be taken  to our  leader, or something like that.
Who would that leader be today?  Maybe  that’s part of the problem. They scout out our planet, they realize that we’re divided into  hundreds of nations, speaking thousands of languages, and most of  them are ruled by idiots and thieves.
I do have another theory, which I’m pretty  sure I’ve written about here at some point, but I don’t remember when.  It’s that aliens, being literal light years ahead of us in propulsion and life support technology, are probably somewhat more advance than us in inter-species psychology.  They look at the world, and see that humans are the dominant species, but how many species of human do they see?  One.  They will know a bit about evolution, they will be able to postulate the existence of Neanderthals, Denisovans, Homo Florensis, and others.  They will put two  and two  together and say:  These are people  that kill their rivals.  If they leave their system and spread throughout the galaxy, they will be a scourge on all civilized peoples.
Leave them be.  Perhaps they’ll self-destruct.
