Fuck Chuck, and Good Luck

Sanders people are, of course, outraged with the choice of Chuck Schumer as the Senate Minority Leader, and I get that, I wish they’d gone with Bernie as well but technically, that might not be possible because he is not officially an independent and just caucusing with the Dems doesn’t mean they’re going to give him the party boss position, and it was probably clear to them he wouldn’t, otherwise he might not have made the switch.
On the one hand, it does show how oblivious the Democrats are. They just heard the loudest “Fuck you!” in the history of politics – well, maybe France, when they were guillotining nobles in the streets while the crowds cheered because, despite all the historical movies and such which portray this as a bad thing, a lot of those fuckers had it coming, but certainly the loudest since then. And they go ahead and nominate Chuck, the bankers’ friend, Schumer.
The thing we have to understand, though, is they didn’t have anybody else we would have been happy with. Tulsi Gabbard? No, that’s the House. Elizabeth Warren? Oh, yeah, Sanders’ fans are ready to forgive her and accept her. Just kidding, her name cannot be mentioned on a pro-Sanders page without a pent-up reservoir of rage and hostility breaking its dam and flooding the valley, drowning cows and chickens, and washing away dozens of tarpaper shacks. Al Franken? Sorry, same objection as Warren. Russ Feingold? Sorry, didn’t get elected.
So, the Democrats are in a pickle. We want them to show a more liberal face, or we will have to start a new party by 2018, in times for the midterms. And, they don’t really have a liberal face to show. Whether that’s because they don’t want to, or they can’t, either way, is now a moot point.
They either do, or they’re through.

Mars

I have a new favorite TV show. ‘Mars’ on the National Geographic channel. It begins (well, I don’t know if this is how the show actually began because I sort of came in in the middle, but it’s certainly a start point as to plot development)in 2016 (announced by bold, white letters on a dark screen, very dramatic)with the planning process, which is actual current scientists like Elon Musk, Neil deGrass Tyson, Anne Druyen and a few I didn’t know, but talking real science, and then switches to 2033 (bwlods) and the dramatic re-enactment, or pre-enactment, I guess we should say.
When you think about it, this is using science fiction to run a simulated training scenario, to trouble shoot for potential future problems and brainstorm on how to solve them. Quite brilliant, really. It’s Star Trek that hits closer to home.
In the episode I saw (if this turns out to not actually be a series and was a one time, one hour documentary about landing on Mars, I’ll be disappointed)the crew survived a fiery landing while the gang at NASA or whatever watched in extreme tension. One (who I guess is Captain Kirk, unless he dies in episode 2, in which case he’s Joe Redshirt)suffered serious injuries while saving everybody else’s butt during the landing and is spitting up blood while they try and make the 75 kilometer hike from the damaged ship to base camp and stoically refusing medical assistance every two seconds.
I suspect the hero dude will survive because he is Buzz Lightyear, so to speak, and they’ve already got a funny, black guy, a cute nurse, and a serious, female Asian pilot whose twin (maybe) sister is at mission control and I half expected them to pull some chintzy sympathetic mind communication thing as a stunt but they didn’t do that, fortunately.
Will Buzz Chiseljaw make it to base camp alive? How will they survive the freezing temperatures? (spacesuits,I guess) How long will it take them to build accommodation? Will it be like Robinson Crusoe’s treehouse? Will anybody have sex?
Stay tuned.

Hypocrisy Has a New Name

First prize for offensive Facebook comment of the week goes to a minor official in the town of Clay, right smack dab in the middle of West Virginia, Pamela Ramsey Taylor, who changed her status update to say: “It will be so refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady back in the White House. I’m tired of seeing a Ape in heels.”
The mayor of the town, a woman named Beverly Whaling, commented “Made my day, Pam.”
Both women have since resigned, so at least that.
Now, there are a couple of things glaring wrong with this comment.
First, the criticism of Michelle Obama, who is damned near the definition of a classy lady. I can understand somebody criticizing her husband. Failure to close Guantanamo, failure to end corruption, failure to end the wars in the Middle East, and a host of other failures, but all Michelle’s ever done is to say people should eat more vegetables and exercise. Now, I am not real big on vegetables myself, given a choice between a burger and a salad I will pick the burger every time. And, the most heavily exercised part of my body is my fingers, from constantly sitting on my fat ass and either writing this blog, or posting my own stupid comments on Facebook. But, I don’t hate people just for talking about healthy eating and exercise.
Secondly, it’s so inaccurate. Michelle Obama has a fine, fit figure. So,I guess Pamela Ramsey Taylor is a tad bit racist, because there is no other explanation.
Third, though, is the description of Melania Trump as a “classy, beautiful, dignified lady.” I’ll grant, she’s not bad looking. I don’t think she’s prettier than Michelle, but I also don’t think we should be rating first ladies on their looks. Eleanor Roosevelt does not fare well on that scale and, as far as first ladies having a positive impact, she’s probably #1 in history.
But classy? I don’t think it’s slut shaming to point out the well known fact that she was a nude model, and there are plenty of nude photos of her (some lesbian, nude photos, too)available on the internet. The reason I don’t post them here is because I’m writing this blog in Chrome (Firefox fucked up) and I can’t figure out how to add a photo. Otherwise I would, because I’m kind of sleazy that way.
Also, dignified? The woman is married to Donald fucking Trump for God’s sake. There is plenty of money in that job, and fame, and maybe even some degree of power, but dignity – I don’t think so.
But the most ironic part of all is when you see a photo of Pamela Ramsey Taylor, which is also not hard to find online. Suffice it to say she is not winning any beauty pageants any time soon, not even in Clay, West Virginia.

The Joy of Protesting

I am, in principal, in favor of protesting, especially as the alternative is not protesting, and what kind of a lame ass response is that to the world we live in. I’ve got a few ideas about tactics and how protests could be done better, but that’s not the topic of tonight’s blog.
What I’m saying is that protest itself is a good thing and people on Facebook who are criticizing the protesters for protesting and calling them whiny loser crybabies are maybe missing the point, especially since writing comments on Facebook is a form of protest, so in protesting the protesters we become protesters ourselves.
In fact, I’d probably be joining in the protests myself, if it weren’t for two important considerations. The first is logistical. Being on a different continent renders actual, physical participation impossible.
The second is that I don’t entirely agree with the protesters’ goals. Oh, I agree that Trump is an ogre, a semi-retarded plutocrat, a short fingered crotch grabber, and a danger to society.
But, he did win the election.
Even so, I agree that the time to start protesting him is now, and it would be good if impeachment proceedings are well underway before his term even begins (yeah, I know, President Pence, but it’s the principal of the thing. If you can’t get Trump impeached, when will there ever be a president bad enough to impeach?)
But, the protesters are all acting like Hillary got cheated or something, and seem to want to get her installed in the White House. They speak of her as if she were a woman of great courage, and character, instead of the conniving shitweasel she actually is.
I suppose I will eventually get around to criticizing Trump. Lord knows, there is plenty to criticize. But I’m going to wait for the Hillary people to shut up first.

Big Moon

I’ve seen a few people posting it, and it’s within the realm of believability, so I’m going to go ahead and believe it and pass it on here, that the moon is the closest to the Earth that it’s been since 1948, which does strike me as a bit weird, because it’s orbiting, and if its orbit is irregular, like sometimes scooping further in and sometimes straying farther out, that’s scary. What if it gets a bit too close, to the point where gravity becomes irresistible and it drops out of orbit and bop, suddenly falls right on top of us, that’s a hell of a lot more rock than the Chicxulub meteor, and look what that did. Not going to worry about it too much, though. It’s a big, beautiful moon and I’ll sleep well tonight.

I also wondered, in passing, if the proximity of the moon might have had any effect on the Tsunami that hit New Zealand today, but, nah, not unless it actually had something to do with causing the quake and since quakes happen all the time with the moon in different positions (or so I suppose, maybe someone should look into that)that’s just wild speculation.
Bad week in the music world, with the loss of both Leonard Cohen and Leon Russell, but that’s more explainable. If the golden age of modern music was the 60s and 70s (and it was, I’m telling you), then anybody who was performing then was probably in their 20s in the 60s, which means they’re in their 70s now, and that’s when people tend to die. Cohen was 82, Russell was 74.
Like the results of the 2016 election; tragic, but hardly surprising.
