Blindfolding the Observatory

Well, I’m bummed about the New York primary, and outraged about the Dallas cop who killed a guy in his own apartment because (she says) she thought he was an intruder in hers (she lived downstairs), and the Dallas PD is  doing everything it can to smear the victim and make excuses for the cop, so she’ll probably get off.  I’ve got a theory about it: They’d had a brief fling, but he decided to break it off, because the convenience of  her living in the same building was outweighed by her being kind of nasty, so she showed up drunk and in uniform, albeit off  duty, and  killed him.
I am mildly pleased that Manafort is  copping a plea and co-operating with Mueller, but I thought that had happened already, so it comes as a bit of an anti-climax.
The thing I really  want to talk about is  the closure of  the National Solar Observatory in Sunspot, New Mexico.  It happened on the 6th of  September but I’m just hearing about it today, which makes me suspicious right there.  Of course, it’s a hard story  for the press to cover because anybody they can interview – like the local sheriff – can only  say they don’t know  what’s going on because the FBI, with a black helicopter and  all – aren’t telling anybody.
I’ve heard the  sunspot theory, like they saw a solar flare which is going to  extinguish all life on  Earth, or  at least knock  out our electrical  system.  But, you’d think that’s something the FBI would  warn people  about, so  they  could get underground, stock  up on bottled water and candles, that kind  of  stuff.  I’ve heard the Chinese spying theory, that somehow they’d hacked the antennae to spy on the nearby White Sands missile range.  But, it’s been over a week.  How long does it  take to replace a couple of antennae?
I think  it’s aliens.   The good folks at the NSO probably found confirmation of  the signals from the Borra-Trottier star systems.  I don’t know why the U.S. federal  government would  want to keep that secret from  all  the people of the world, or what they think gives them the right, but I’m absolutely certain the government WOULD lie to us about it.  It’s their default mode.

New York Primary

Fingers crossed for Cynthia Nixon and Zephyr Teachout in today’s primaries.  Nixon’s campaign has impressed me very much.  The first campaign ad I saw for  her, I commented immediately that it  struck me as 100% identity politics and there was no reason at all for me to support her on the basis of that, and it was almost as if she read my comment, because since then she has focused on the issues like  a laser, and they are the Bernie issues.  She’s big on single payer, and quick enough to defend it with facts, numbers and logic.  Smart lady.  She’s also been  very vocal about legalizing marijuana.  She barely mentions at all that she’s a lady, that she’s a  lesbian, that she was one of the stars of a popular TV series…

I never did see it, but it doesn’t matter.  She could have played a murderous psychopath, and it shouldn’t make a difference.  But, politically, it kind of does.  People elected Arnold Schwarzenegger, no doubt hoping he would kick some ass, or at least get in some snappy one-liners – which he did, although I think his record as governor is  mixed, at best.  Ronald Reagan always played a good guy, especially in those Bonzo movies.  The guy who played Radar O’Reilly (I  forget the actor’s name – he’s so  totally associated with the role) only got elected because his TV character was so likable.
Can you imagine anybody  voting for Anthony Perkins?  How about Robert Englund?  I don’t think so.
Anyway, I particularly like Zephyr Teachout, not just because of her totally cool name, but because she’s promised to go after Trump, which  she would be in a very good position to do as Attorney General of New York.  Trump is a New York resident, and owns lots of businesses there.  She could destroy  him on code violations.
So I wish them both, and all of the progressive candidates running, the best of luck.

Elon Musk

I am of mixed opinions about Elon Musk.  On the one hand, I am a huge advocate of space exploration, I think that this is an imperative thing for people to do.  We are human beings.  We did not come to dominate the Earth by being willing to stay in one place.  Also, the Earth and even our solar system are some day going  to die (O.K., in a couple of billion years, but it’s going to happen)  When that time comes, the people  of that time will be glad we listened to Elon Musk, or resent us mightily for not having done so.
But underpaying his employees, and drug testing them, is pretty bad.  It’s his company, so he can get away with it, but it’s a stain on his character, for sure.

I approve of solar energy, and like the idea that he’s making roof panels which are solar and cost as little as a conventional roof.  I like that he’s building off the grid, self-sufficient houses.  I think  electric cars are great and look forward to the day that they are the only cars on the road.  And don’t even get me started on hyper-loop trains.  Hyper-loop trains are just cool.

But, when the topic turns to Elon Musk, all the good progressives point out what an evil billionaire capitalist he is, and they make a compelling case.
Then, some trolls always jump in slagging him off in irrelevant ways.  There’s the whole ‘do we really need to go into space’ argument, which I give no credence at all.  One person left a comment, which provided the rage for me to write this blog, which said ‘solar energy  will always be shit.’  Well, no.  Solar energy has powered life on Earth since there has been life on Earth.  It can power all our industry, too, if we start collecting it more efficiently.
And if those are the wankers who are opposing him, I’m going to have to continue giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Travelers

So, in between arguing with people on Facebook about whether 9-11 was an inside job (yes, of course it was, if you’ve ever read this blog before you probably knew I’d say that), and Serena Williams, who is getting just as much press at this specific moment in time, I was watching my new favorite TV show, Travelers.
There have been a few times I’ve thought they jumped the proverbial shark, but the episodes I watched tonight, were Marcie almost died but they did some kind of computerized mind meld and saved her but it wiped out her  short term memory.  Then Trevor kidnapped the school  psychiatrist, to  save her from imminent death, but she just thinks he’s nuts when he tells her he’s from the future, and it doesn’t work anyway, because the director just sends somebody new to  take over her body, and then an assassin comes back  from the future and everybody’s getting text messages telling them to  kill everybody else and they get an order to destroy the quantum entanglement frame and there’s this whole Mexican standoff scene, with guns and axes pointed every which way, and they find out the future they came from has been radically changed and there is a rapid fire conversation about the ethics of  time travel, and possible unintended consequences of your actions, and obeying the rules or  thinking for  yourself and would you still be in favor of  following the rules if the rule was that I should kill you (and it was).  It was a great moment in television.
The thing about it is, it’s a science fiction setting, but really it’s a body snatchers type of theme.

Blogus Interruptus

I didn’t write a blog last night because I was too stoned.  It’s not that I  haven’t written blogs stoned before, I do  it all the time, it’s probably more than half of them, but last night I was just staring at the screen and couldn’t come up  with a good topic.  As Elon Musk said, they call it stoned because you sit there like a stone.
I’ve already  written about the Serena Williams debacle and, even though people are still  talking about it, there’s nothing much more to say.  People have lined up, taken their positions, and that’s where they will  stay for all time, while the world of tennis moves on.  Tonight I will no doubt write about the anniversary of 9/11, because it’s an important day that changed the world, but I’ll probably just repeat why I think it was an  inside job, or remind people of 9/11/73, which is  a necessary reminder that the U.S. should not interfere in  South American politics as it almost always ends badly in the long run.  When melting old wax figure Henry Kissinger finally dies, may the day come soon, U.S. politicians will be lined up on the stage, ready to kiss the ass of his recently departed spirit, but people will be dancing in the streets in South America.
In fact, U.S. intervention everywhere usually winds up being a bad deal, which is why I find the recent U.S. actions in Syria so confusing.  All they have to do is drop it, back off, let Russia win this one and it will be over in a matter of days and everyone can forget Syria exists for a decade or two.  Absolutely nothing is to be gained by dropping white phosphorus on a bunch of civilians.  If they manage to revive the war, thousands more will die but the result will be the same.
Bashar Assad has won.  Get over it.
